Garrett was dealing with several concerns in his Dillonvale home that pointed to a larger home-performance problem. There was a persistent musty odor, visible mold, high energy bills, and concerns about excess moisture in the attic. Mold also needed to be addressed in both the attic and living spaces.

Rather than treating the mold and comfort concerns as unrelated problems, Home Environment Solutions approached the home as a complete system.

The project included mold remediation work in the attic and living areas to address the existing microbial growth. But remediation alone wasn't the entire solution. Reducing the conditions contributing to excess attic moisture was also an important part of the project.

Our team completed comprehensive attic air sealing to reduce unwanted air movement between the conditioned living space and attic. We sealed top plates, addressed additional attic leakage points, and properly air-sealed and insulated the attic access.

These areas matter because air escaping from the home can carry heat and moisture into the attic. By reducing those pathways, we can strengthen the separation between the living space and attic while improving the overall performance of the home.

Once the necessary air sealing was completed, the attic insulation was upgraded to improve the home's thermal boundary and energy efficiency.

This wasn't simply a mold-removal project or an insulation project. The goal was to address the existing mold, reduce moisture in the attic, improve energy efficiency, and create a home that feels more comfortable throughout the year.

With the completed improvements, Garrett's home now has a stronger air and thermal boundary, reduced attic moisture concerns, and improved year-round comfort and energy performance.

It's a great example of why visible attic mold or a musty smell shouldn't always be treated as an isolated problem. Understanding how moisture, airflow, and insulation interact can help address the conditions behind the problem while improving the performance of the entire home.

Lorrie was experiencing two frustrating problems in her Bloomingdale, OH home: high energy bills and indoor temperatures that were difficult to keep consistent.

When a home becomes uncomfortable or expensive to heat and cool, homeowners often assume they need more insulation or a new heating and cooling system. However, sometimes the problem involves smaller, overlooked areas in the attic where conditioned air can escape.

For Lorrie's single-story home, Home Environment Solutions completed targeted attic improvements designed to strengthen the separation between the living space and the attic.

One important area was the attic access. Attic access openings can become weak points in a home's thermal boundary when they aren't properly sealed and insulated. Even if the surrounding attic has adequate insulation, an untreated access opening can allow conditioned air to escape.

Our team also addressed the top plates, where interior walls meet the attic. These areas can contain hidden gaps that allow air to move between the living space and attic. Sealing these openings helps reduce unwanted airflow and improve the home's overall efficiency.

During the winter, warm indoor air can escape through openings in the ceiling and into the attic. During the summer, attic heat and air leakage can contribute to uncomfortable indoor conditions. Both situations can make it harder for the heating and cooling system to maintain desired temperature.

Lorrie's project demonstrates that improving home performance isn't always about replacing all the insulation. Sometimes, identifying and correcting specific weaknesses can be an important part of making a home more comfortable and efficient.

Mike, of Bridgeport, OH, reached out to Home Environment Solutions in hopes of reducing energy costs for his home. Our home energy expert, Russ, performed an audit of Mike's home and found solutions to his heating and cooling woes. Our team of service technicians removed and disposed of the existing insulation to prepare the space for the installation of clean insulation. The team then installed baffles along the perimeter and air sealed with Zypfoam along the top seal and as needed to the exterior walls. OSB boards and Zypfoam were also installed on the soffits above the kitchen. The chimney was wrapped with RockWool and metal flashing and Fire Caulk was installed to air seal around the unit. SilverGlo 4" and OSB boards were used to construct the SuperPlatform Catwalk and vertical dams for blown-in TruSoft Cellulose insulation. All of this was capped off by installing a new scuttle cover, which was air sealed and insulated with 4" SilverGlo insulation boards, weather stripping, and Zypfoam. The customer was left with a much more efficient and comfortable home that cost less to heat in the winters and cool in the summers.

Josh reached out because his home had high energy bills, drafty rooms, and noticeable hot and cold temperature swings upstairs. The basement was also damp and drafty, which was contributing to condensation and affecting comfort throughout the home.

Our team focused on strengthening the home’s thermal boundary from top to bottom. We sealed and insulated the attic to reduce heat loss, upgraded insulation levels, sealed attic penetrations and top plates, and insulated the attic access opening.

In the basement, we insulated and air sealed the rim joists to stop cold air infiltration and reduce moisture-related issues that were causing condensation. By addressing both the attic and basement, we tightened the entire building envelope.

With these improvements complete, the home now has more consistent temperatures upstairs, fewer drafts, improved basement comfort, and better overall energy efficiency.
