Dave, a returning customer in Saint Clairsville, OH, reached out because his single-story home had cold floors, drafty rooms, and rising energy bills. He wanted to improve comfort while making sure the attic insulation stayed where it belonged, especially around the garage ceiling and front porch areas.

Our team sealed and insulated the attic, tightened up air leaks, and built dam walls to properly separate the attic from the garage ceiling and front porch. This ensured the blown-in cellulose insulation remained contained in the attic while stopping air and heat loss through key leakage points.

Now, Dave’s home is more comfortable, floors are warmer, drafts are reduced, and energy costs are lower. The attic is also better organized and easier to access for storage and maintenance.

Garrett was dealing with several concerns in his Dillonvale home that pointed to a larger home-performance problem. There was a persistent musty odor, visible mold, high energy bills, and concerns about excess moisture in the attic. Mold also needed to be addressed in both the attic and living spaces.

Rather than treating the mold and comfort concerns as unrelated problems, Home Environment Solutions approached the home as a complete system.

The project included mold remediation work in the attic and living areas to address the existing microbial growth. But remediation alone wasn't the entire solution. Reducing the conditions contributing to excess attic moisture was also an important part of the project.

Our team completed comprehensive attic air sealing to reduce unwanted air movement between the conditioned living space and attic. We sealed top plates, addressed additional attic leakage points, and properly air-sealed and insulated the attic access.

These areas matter because air escaping from the home can carry heat and moisture into the attic. By reducing those pathways, we can strengthen the separation between the living space and attic while improving the overall performance of the home.

Once the necessary air sealing was completed, the attic insulation was upgraded to improve the home's thermal boundary and energy efficiency.

This wasn't simply a mold-removal project or an insulation project. The goal was to address the existing mold, reduce moisture in the attic, improve energy efficiency, and create a home that feels more comfortable throughout the year.

With the completed improvements, Garrett's home now has a stronger air and thermal boundary, reduced attic moisture concerns, and improved year-round comfort and energy performance.

It's a great example of why visible attic mold or a musty smell shouldn't always be treated as an isolated problem. Understanding how moisture, airflow, and insulation interact can help address the conditions behind the problem while improving the performance of the entire home.

Mold Remediation (Removal) 

Installed Silverglo insulation in the Attic of this Bloomingdale Ohio Home.  

Mike, of Bridgeport, OH, reached out to Home Environment Solutions in hopes of reducing energy costs for his home. Our home energy expert, Russ, performed an audit of Mike's home and found solutions to his heating and cooling woes. Our team of service technicians removed and disposed of the existing insulation to prepare the space for the installation of clean insulation. The team then installed baffles along the perimeter and air sealed with Zypfoam along the top seal and as needed to the exterior walls. OSB boards and Zypfoam were also installed on the soffits above the kitchen. The chimney was wrapped with RockWool and metal flashing and Fire Caulk was installed to air seal around the unit. SilverGlo 4" and OSB boards were used to construct the SuperPlatform Catwalk and vertical dams for blown-in TruSoft Cellulose insulation. All of this was capped off by installing a new scuttle cover, which was air sealed and insulated with 4" SilverGlo insulation boards, weather stripping, and Zypfoam. The customer was left with a much more efficient and comfortable home that cost less to heat in the winters and cool in the summers.
