Job Stories From Hancock County, WV
Weirton WV Businesses need comfort too!

The Route 22 Sports Bar is a new venue in Weirton, WV.  It is a new construction commercial building with a traditional attic.

The owner Carlos was interested in premium insulation to keep his heating and cooling costs down as much as possible.  Carlos was referred to Home Environment Solutions by the shopping plaza owner where this venue is located.  The owner was extremely pleased with the previous results in other portions of the plaza including attics, common walls, fire walls and soundproofing throughout.   He was happy recommend Home Environment Solutions to Carlos.

Mark, the evaluation consultant from HES proposed air sealing and insulating the attic to an R49 value.  The production team arrived on the scheduled day and began by air sealing all of the ceiling penetrations, top plates and HVAC boot penetrations.  Next they installed TruSoft PVC soffit baffle system along the perimeter of the soffit for proper ventilation and to prevent insulation from migrating into the soffit. This product meets new EnergyStar requirements.  The attic access scuttle hole was insulated with 4 inches of SilverGlo high density insulation board and air sealed with weather stripping. Finally the team blew in TruSoft Cellulose insulation throughout the attic to R49.

Carlos and his wife noticed the results immediately.   They commented on the comfort of even temperature throughout the building, how well the heat stayed in and the furnaces hardly run anymore.  They also noticed that the sound is much better inside the bar / restaurant.   The best part is this is a permanent improvement that the owners and customers will enjoy for many years to come.

New Cumberland, WV crawlspace like new again!

Duke has lived in his home for the last 40 years and has had crawlspace issues.  His home has had cold floors in the winter and musty odors.  Duke was finally ready for a change.   He was asking his friends and family if they had a recommendation for a company they would trust to come to his home to fix his problems.   One of his family members was a previous customer of Home Environment Solutions and were very happy with the results of their job, so they told him to call us for an evaluation.

Russell went out to inspect the crawlspace and the rest of the home.  He first took the time to speak with Duke to hear what he had to say and what he wanted to accomplish and then went to work to start his inspection.   Russ found a significant amount of mold, a lack of insulation and large puddles of water throughout the crawl space.   Some of the wood joists showed signs of rot and water damage.  Russ proposed a list of solutions to permanently resolve Duke’s concerns.

First our certified mold remediation team came in to remediate the mold in the crawl space.  Using our advanced mold removal processes, the area clean and like new again.  Next the standing ground water was addressed by installing perimeter drainage pipe and a SmartSump System including a Zoeller cast iron sump pump.  After the mold and water was addressed the team air sealed and insulated the space.  Drainage matting, CleanSpace encapsulation liner and TerraBlock ground insulation was installed.  A SaniDry Sedona dehumidifier was placed in the crawl space to address any future humidity.  Finally, we cleaned and sanitized the HVAC and duct system to NADCA standards.

The end result was a dramatically different living environment.  Duke says his floors are much warmer in the winter and the home smells completely different.   He was impressed with the production team and was at ease during the entire process because they explained everything that was completed each day.  Best of all, he has an entire room for storage.

Weirton WV home has never been more comfortable

The homeowner, Wayne, has lived in his large ranch home for more than thirty years.  He has had extremely high utility bills the entire time.  In addition to high energy costs his home had very uneven temperatures in the winter and it was impossible to cool in the summer.   Wayne was unsure that anything could be done to fix these problems. He was referred to Home Environment Solutions by a contractor that has used us on a couple of remodeling projects.

Mark was the consultant that went to evaluate the home.  Wayne and his wife gave a lot of detail of the things they wanted to change and then there was a thorough inspection of the attic and entire home.   Mark found many different causes for the uncomfortable areas and high energy bills.   The attic had old fiberglass insulation that was installed incorrectly and wasn’t nearly enough R value.  It also had many large open voids that were allowing the conditioned air in the home to escape.  The HVAC system in the attic had multiple ducts and branches that were under insulated and leaking.  Mark proposed a solution to resolve all of these issues.

The production team arrived and removed all of the inefficient fiberglass insulation and discarded it.  Next they added framing and plywood in the attic to fill all of the large voids that were part of the original construction.  Then they air sealed all of the holes, cracks and penetrations in the attic that were allowing the air from the living space to escape. Once that was completed the production team installed TruSoft PVC soffit baffle system along the perimeter of the soffit for proper ventilation and to prevent insulation from migrating into the soffit. This product meets new EnergyStar requirements.  The ducts in the attic were all repaired and insulated.  Finally TruSoft Cellulose insulation was blown in throughout to and R-Value of R60.

The homeowners could feel the difference in their home immediately.  Rooms that were always much colder than the others were now the same temperature and comfortable.  Wayne noticed that the furnace kicks on half as much as it did before.  They say the results have far surpassed anything they imagined possible.

Weirton, WV Rental Property Owner - Insulation

A Weirton WV rental property owner wanted to make sure his residents were happy when they rented from him.  After one of his tenants completed their lease, he checked the property for damages and noticed that the air conditioner was running the entire time he was in the home.  He realized there was something not adding up because he just purchased a new air conditioning unit two years prior.  He went into the attic to his shock realized the insulation was not close to being good enough to keep the hot and cool air in the home.  It was going right out the roof.

The owner called Home Environment Solutions and asked for our thoughts.  We agreed with him that he did not have enough insulation and it was time to remove the dirty old batted insulation and replace it with TruSoft Cellulose insulation and air sealing all leaks and closed off all voids.

At the end of each of his leases, he asks his residents to give their average utility bills.  To his surprise, the bills have gone down which makes every happy and saves them money.

Weirton, WV Attic/High Energy Costs

This home in Weirton WV is the typical home for the tri-state area.  It was built around the 1960's and has been well taken care of.  Most everything in the home was updated except for the insulation.

The owners love their home but were not able to use all of the space upstairs in the usable attic area due to it being way to hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter.  They put in new windows, air, and furnace and were still having issues and were not sure why.  That's when they called Home Environment Solutions to evaluate the problem and come up with a solution.

What we found was an attic with very poor, dirty insulation that no longer met the standards of todays codes.  We also found many voids and gaps where air was leaking out of the home.  We removed all of the old insulation, and added new insulation, air sealed, used SilverGlo on the walls, and added storage space to the other side.

The homeowner could not believe the difference they felt immediately.

Weirton, WV Business - Dense Packed Insulation

This Weirton area business had a lot of comfort issues and high energy bills.  The employees upstairs were unable to keep the temperature comfortable through the year.  This company also had gutter issues which was causing the outside to deteriorate and creating mold.

We removed all of the paneling and insulation and replaced it to give our guys a sturdy wall to complete the second step.  We then wrapped the walls and drilled holes to dense pack the walls.  Once completed we foamed the holes so the business was ready for the new siding they wanted to install.  The business was able to cut down on their energy bills for the first time in 10 years.

Weirton, WV Moldy Basement & Attic Insulation

This Weirton, WV home had multiple problems.  Mold in the basement and also in the attic.  The home owner called us because he couldn't actually see the mold growing on the paneling in the basement from a water issue.  The water came in from behind the walls and starting crawling up the paneling.  As you can see, there are many different colors of mold in the basement.  We tell our customers, "It doesn't matter what type of mold it is, you want to get it removed."

With this home, all of the paneling had to be removed so we could clean behind the walls.  We used air scrubbers and contained the basement so the mold would not go airborne and spread through the rest of the home.

In the attic, we removed all of the insulation and remediated the mold using the same process.  Once everything was cleaned we air sealed and blew in TruSoft Cellulose.

The home owners were thrilled with the results and happy to no longer have a lingering musty moldy smell in their home.

Weirton WV Cape Cod Upstairs bedroom

This Weirton WV cape cod home had an upstairs master suite.  The only problem was the home owner wasn't able to use it due to it being too hot in the summer.  He purchased the home because of this room and was not able to enjoy it.  He finally got fed up and decided to sleep in one of the bedrooms on the main floor of the home.  After 5 years he decided he was going to try to figure out the problem or sell the house.  He opted to give it one last shot and called Home Environment Solutions for an evaluation.

What we found was an extremely hot attic with very little insulation.  In the end of July we took a reading with the thermocamera and found the ceiling temperature was 101 degrees F.  No wonder the home owner was ready to call it quits.  We went over the entire process of how we can make his home more comfortable and give him back his master suite, he was ready to go.  He immediately scheduled his job and two weeks later we went back to complete it.  Once the air sealing, insulation, and knee walls were done, we went back to do one final reading.  In the middle of August, the temperature reading dropped to 75.7 degrees F.

The homeowner noticed a dramatic difference right away and was excited to be able to sleep in his own room.  Needless to say, he did not end up selling his home and as the story goes, lived comfortably ever after.
